In Kerala, most temples have a sacred pond (known as temple tank or Kulam) near the shrine. These ponds hold spiritual and practical significance. They are used for ritual purification, where devotees cleanse themselves before entering the temple. The water also helps maintain a cool and serene environment around the temple. Many of these ponds are home to sacred fish and are considered holy. Examples include the Ananthapura Lake Temple and the Padmanabhaswamy Temple, both of which have significant temple tanks.
