Bronze statues in Thanjavur are traditionally made using the lost-wax casting method, an ancient art practiced for centuries. First, a detailed model of the statue is sculpted in wax. The wax model is then covered with layers of clay and dried. When heated, the wax melts and drains out, leaving a hollow mold. Molten bronze is poured into the mold and allowed to cool. After breaking the clay mold, artisans carefully polish and finish the statue, adding fine details by hand.
