Its a traditional oil extraction setup, often found in rural parts of India. It is commonly known as a bullock-driven oil press or “chekku” (in Tamil) / “ghani” (in Hindi). Here’s what’s happening is that this is the large vertical wooden pestle is inserted into a metal or wooden container (called the chekku or ghani) that holds oil seeds such as sesame, groundnut, or coconut.
The horizontal wooden beam attached to the pestle is connected to a bullock or ox. When the bullock walks in a circular path, it rotates the beam, which in turn crushes and grinds the seeds to extract oil.
The circular base you see on the ground marks the path where the bullock moves around the press. This method of extraction is slow and natural, producing cold-pressed oil, which retains its nutrients and flavor. Such traditional setups are still used in many Indian villages, both for cultural preservation and for producing organic oil.
