The Mahabalipuram Shore Temple was built around the 8th century by the Pallava dynasty. One of the finest examples of early Dravidian architecture, it is situated on the shores of the Bay of Bengal. It is a granite temple with exquisitely detailed carvings dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. Its distinctive pyramidal shape is beautifully complemented by the vimanas topped with superstructure towers, and apart from it, they are most elaborately depicted by a variety of bas-relief sculptures done on the whole temple wall, depicting Hindu mythology. Rounding the temple there are rows of finely carved Nandi statues and deities and mythical creatures, reflecting the artistic and cultural richness of the Pallava age.
