Paro Taktsang, the Tiger's Nest Monastery, is a sacred Buddhist site precariously situated on the cliffside at the Paro Valley in Bhutan. Loosely hanging from 3,120 m (10,240 feet) above the sea level, it stands on a sheer rock face with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Established in 1692, the location marks the site on which Guru Padmasambhava, the saint who introduced Buddhism into Bhutan, purportedly meditated in the eighth century, flying on the back of a tigress to reach that site. Being one of the steep and spectacular tracks, Paro Taktsang represents only a glimpse of Bhutan's rich religious heritage-a marvelous architecture closely tied to deep meaning. Visitors are treated to a serene atmosphere filled with the peace that surrounds this holy place.
