Charkha is the traditional Indian spinning wheel used for hand spinning cotton, wool or similar fibres into threads. It was adopted as an emblem of the Indian independence movement, in the hands of Mahatma Gandhi; as something that makes independent human being with self-sufficiency and economical independence. The charkha being light weight and portable made it important to revive indigenous crafts during colonialism in protest of manufactured textiles. To this day it is an icon of minimalism, sustainability and do-it-yourself.
