This is the famous Descent of the Ganges (Arjuna’s Penance) rock relief in Mamallapuram (Mahabalipuram), Tamil Nadu, India. This massive open-air rock carving, dating back to the 7th century Pallava dynasty, is one of the largest bas-reliefs in the world. It is about 27 meters long and 9 meters high, carved on two huge boulders.

The carvings narrate two possible legends:

Arjuna’s Penance – Arjuna performing severe penance to Lord Shiva to obtain the powerful celestial weapon (Pasupatastra).

Descent of the Ganges – The story of how Bhagiratha’s penance brought the holy river Ganga down from heaven to earth, with Lord Shiva controlling its mighty flow.

The relief is filled with life-like carvings of gods, celestial beings, sages, animals (notably elephants and monkeys), and humans. The natural cleft in the rock represents the flow of the river Ganga descending to earth.

This monument highlights the spiritual devotion, mythological storytelling, and incredible artistry of Pallava architecture, and it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Mahabalipuram.
